This proposal aims to create a tranquil and accessible surau that acts as a community space in Bandar Serenia. The surau, with a capacity of over 300 people, includes various facilities such as wudhu areas, toilets, offices for the imam and bilal, a playground, and a management office. The design prioritizes accessibility for women, children, and disabled users, with separate pedestrian entrances from adjacent neighborhoods and vehicular access from the main road. The architectural concept is inspired by the Islamic ablaq style, featuring black-and-white stripes and utilizing prefabricated elements through the Industrialised Building System (IBS) to combine modern efficiency with classical aesthetics.
The site, previously a palm oil plantation, is being transformed into a suburban area, with potential for creating pedestrian linkages to enhance community connectivity. The surau is designed as a local landmark for the north of Serenia, catering to a community of mostly young families. The prayer hall is planned to be calm and meditative, with air-conditioning concealed in the ceiling and natural light strategically used to minimize heat.
